What is Couples Counselling?
Couples counselling can help couples to work on their relationship in many ways. It might be that you want to be able to explore and express your thoughts and feelings openly and honestly in a safe space so that they can be heard. You might want to find new ways of relating and communicating with each other to enable you to move forward.
I will provide you both with a non-judgemental and supportive relationship and environment to help you work through the difficulties that you are having as a couple, whatever they may be.
As a couples counsellor, your relationship is my client rather than any one individual within the relationship. A relationship is made up of two people often with differing life experiences, personalities, wants and needs. This means that every relationship is different, there is never one solution for any problem. Together we will gain a better understanding of your relationship, and together we will work out what you want to achieve from your counselling sessions and how we might get there.
Additionally, with a background in working with families and post-natal mental health, I also offer sessions for couples who want to prepare for being parents together, or couples who have children and would like to explore how this might be impacting their relationship. Often we have different ideas about how to parent our children and this can cause resentment, confusion and frustration. If we share the same values as our partner, we might assume that they will want to parent in the same way as us, but it can be useful to talk about expectations, fears and differences in the way that we ourselves were parented and the impact that this might have on our natural parenting style.
